Clifton Hampden Bridge

Courtiers House

Courtiers House is haunted by Sarah Fletcher, who in 1769 hung herself from the curtain rails of her bed, using a handkerchief tied to a cord. Aged in her late twenties at the time of her death, the young woman had been driven to the act following the discovery that her husband was planning to bigamously marry another woman. Her apparition has been described as wearing a black silk cloak and she has a purple ribbon in her auburn hair. However, one witness was struck by the look of anguish in her eyes.
